Privacy Policy
Effective date: May 15, 2026
ContextShot is designed to work locally on your devices. We do not operate a cloud service that receives your screenshots, drawings, annotations, or pairing data, and we do not use analytics, advertising SDKs, tracking, or crash-reporting services.
Information handled by the app
ContextShot processes screenshots, annotations, drawings, and related image files so the app can capture, display, annotate, and share them. This information is handled locally on your devices.
Local storage
ContextShot stores content locally on your devices so you can access your screenshots, captures, annotations, and drawings. The app may also store paired-device records, device names, and cryptographic identity information locally to support secure pairing and reconnecting your devices. Secure identity material may be stored using system-provided secure storage such as Keychain.
Permissions
Depending on the platform and features you use, ContextShot may request permission to:
- access the camera on iPad, to scan a QR code displayed on your Mac for pairing
- access the local network, to discover and connect your devices
- capture the screen on Mac, to take screenshots you initiate
- use Accessibility features on Mac, to support global keyboard shortcuts
These permissions are used only to provide the corresponding app functionality.
Device-to-device transfers
When you pair your Mac and iPad or send content between them, data is transferred directly between your devices over local networking frameworks such as Bonjour. This data is not routed through ContextShot-operated servers.
Clipboard, exports, and optional integrations
If you copy content to the clipboard, export it, send it to another app, or use optional integrations with local developer tools (such as MCP), that content may then be handled by the receiving app, device, or service under its own privacy practices. ContextShot does not control third-party apps or services after you choose to share content with them.
Software updates
ContextShot checks for new versions by fetching an update manifest from contextshot.com using the Sparkle framework. These requests include standard information your device sends with any web request, such as your IP address, app version, and macOS version.
We count these requests in aggregate to estimate the number of active users. To do this, we hash your IP address with a daily-rotating secret before storage and do not retain the raw IP. The resulting hash cannot be linked across different days or used to identify you, and we do not share it with third parties. We do not use this data for profiling or advertising.
Each daily update check also includes a randomly-generated identifier so we can count unique installations. This identifier is created on first launch, lives only in your app preferences, and is never linked to your name, email, device name, or any personal data. You can turn it off at any time in Settings → Privacy. When off, the request carries a fixed “opted-out” value instead, and we only count that someone opted out that day. We never record who.
You can decline automatic update checks when Sparkle first prompts for permission.
Data collection
We do not collect personal information, advertising identifiers, or crash reports, and we do not require an account or login. The data we keep is limited to the anonymous, aggregate counts described in “Software updates” above: network reach, version distribution, and unique installations.
Retention and deletion
Your content and pairing records remain on your devices until you delete them, remove a paired device, or clear local app data. Because ContextShot does not store your data on our servers, we generally do not have cloud-hosted user data to access, export, or delete on your behalf.
Children
ContextShot is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to this policy
If we change this Privacy Policy, we will update the effective date above and publish the updated version.
